Membership Types

Provisionals (New Members)
The Junior League of Tuscaloosa (JLT) annually welcomes a class of Provisionals into our family. We are proud of our diversity, attracting hundreds of women of differing racial, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds, who are united in their commitment to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

All Provisionals must meet volunteer and training requirements during their provisional year in JLT in order to attain active member status. All requirements must be completed within the Provisional year, which begins in July and continues through mid-to-late May. We also hold a variety of optional, social events throughout the year so you can meet other members of the League. If you are not yet a Provisional, learn how you can join.

Active Members
Active members are those women who, having successfully completed the New Member year, are now trained volunteers, working in the community, helping to raise and disburse funds back to the community or helping with internal functions and organization of the League.

Each member has a different Placement where she will focus her efforts to serve the community for the year. Placements can range from all types of volunteer opportunities inside and outside the League. Actives are required to serve a Placement  and have the opportunity to serve on a wide range of JLT committees and projects. Additionally, they must attend six General Membership Meetings and/or Socials, serve two shifts in the community per year. which are designed to help develop their volunteer and leadership skills. Active members can sponsor up to two Provisionals each year, vote, and hold office.

Sustaining Members
Sustainers are former active members who have completed at least seven years of active service. Sustaining members have no official requirements but often participate by assisting a committee or placement with their advice and experience.

Sustainers hold separate meetings and social events, and share in all of the privileges of JLT membership except voting and holding office.
